Artist Instructor:

Malte Hagen is a Berlin-based painter and illustrator with an extensive exhibition history and teaching experience at institutions including the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, where he studied Visual Communication. In his artistic practice, he merges objects, figures, and spaces into scenarios within large-format paintings. He utilizes light effects and surfaces to transpose his subjects into a mythical distance. In Malte Hagen’s work, bulky waste and plastic debris are treated as equal to golden helmets and classical poses. The catalog “Subtle Masterworks,” to be published by DCV next year, offers an insight into his extensive body of work.

What to Expect:

Experience watercolor painting through a direct and expressive approach. Guided by the motto “Breathe and Flow,” you will learn how to work with the paper’s white space (“breathe”) and the generous use of water (“flow”) to create light, depth, and movement. Rather than fighting watercolor’s unpredictability, this course shows you how to use it to your advantage.

Through clear foundation exercises and guided demonstrations, you will learn how to build and layer washes, plan color combinations, and balance spontaneity with intention. We will work from simple reference motifs—such as still life, architecture, and landscapes—making the techniques approachable while opening up rich visual possibilities.

The course combines the immediacy of sketching with thoughtful color planning, giving you tools to work efficiently and with confidence. Whether you want to capture everyday moments, travel impressions, or develop ideas for your own projects, you will receive hands-on guidance and individual feedback in a small group setting.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience who want to deepen their understanding of watercolor’s unique, fluid nature—both its controlled and its beautifully untamed qualities. You are welcome to join just one class, to give watercolors a try, even for the first time. For a more comprehensive skill set, join the entire workshop by purchasing the 4 class bundle. Joining for all 4 classes will be the equivalent to an “into watercolor” course.
